"Earning a Free Ride"
This past spring I had the opportunity to coach high school football at Dover-Sherborn High School. One of the team captains, Ted Ouellet, was a standout lineman who received the league's Lineman of the Year Award. Recently, he accepted a scholarship offer to Bowling Green University. Below is the e-mail I sent to congratulate him.

RE: Congratulations

Ted,
I just wanted to congratulate you on finally making it official and signing with Bowling Green. You deserve this opportunity and I know you will make the most of it.
For the past few years, you have been told how great a football player you are. While that is certainly true, you are headed into a land where everyone is just as good. That's not to say that you don't have the ability to stand out; I believe that you do. It's just to say that you will need patience and perseverance if you want to be successful. The formula sounds simple: work hard on the field and in the weight room, study your playbook, and most importantly stay on top of your schoolwork. It’s actually a lot more difficult than it sounds.
I'm sure that you've heard this advice from others and you probably don't need it from me as well. So I will also tell you to find a balance - have fun and enjoy your four years. It goes by fast.
Here's the worst part of you playing at Bowling Green: Now I have to subscribe to all the extra college football channels just in case you are on TV. I'm looking forward to spending the extra cash. If you're not starting on the line next year, at least make sure they know how good you are on kickoff! As always, if there is anything I can do please don’t hesitate to write or call.
Best of luck,
Coach Riecke
