"A Letter To My Friends"
This week’s guest writer is Mike Previti. My wife Kelly and I met Mike about 2 years ago – he works with the property management company in our condo. Eventually we discovered Mike’s second career (or maybe I should say first career) as a musician.
We proudly listen to our Mike Previti CD and have attended some of his shows. I would love to just tell you how good he is, but you can find out yourself by listening here. Mike has worked very hard developing his career. He has been featured on the show "Backstage" and his songs have been used on shows like MTV's The Real World : Hollywood. He is currently working on a new album and we can’t wait for him to get back on stage so we can see some more gigs.
As our guest-writer, I asked Mike to write a letter to his fans. While he was happy to do it, I could definitely sense a certain humility in his tone when I mentioned “fans”. Below you will find the letter – and I recommend seeing Mike live if he is ever playing in your neighborhood.

Dear Friends,
A long time ago, I made the decision to dream - to stick with what my heart told me to do. So I decided to work hard so I could realize the dream of making music my living.
When you start out, you have no clue the determination and thick skin it takes to even try to do so. Forging ahead as the years went on, I did everything I thought I should do and what I read about others doing in interviews, magazines, biographies, etc., in working towards realizing my dream. I found out quickly that in the real world, very, very few make it "big" quickly. Very few people get "discovered". And more often than not, you never realize the dream of becoming successful in the music business as an artist.
However, what I did start to notice was that wherever I went, people would really love what I was doing. My songs and stage presence actually "got" to some people. Sometimes it wasn't the whole crowd at a venue, sometimes it was. But there were always a few people who would give you the nod. The "you really kicked ass and I love your songs" comment.
So you move on. Little by little. Baby steps. As hard as this business is, I have realized that more than having a belief in yourself to get up one more time and trudge ahead, is the faith that people give you through them. They are fans. I always had a hard time with that word because I thought it made me sound conceited to say I had fans. But I did. Some would always come to shows. Others would buy my music and send me an email about how a song touched them and why. Others I have never met before, but they continue to show their support through fan sites and emails – often telling other people about my music. They are from all around the world. It is amazing to think that something I write might touch someone in the same way that a song I like does to me. When I really think about it, it's overwhelming.
I continue to write songs and make music. I continue to gain fans. And I continue to thank God for it. It is a blessing. When my friend Scott asked me to write for his website, he mentioned maybe my letter could be to my fans. I could not give that opportunity up. I have thanked my fans countless times in the past. But words can never express my gratitude in what you've all given to me to get to where I am. You say that you are fans, and I say you are friends.
Thank you
Mike Previti
