"June 2009 Newsletter"
With the first half of 2009 approaching an end, I decided to recap the year thus far on A Letter A Week in a newsletter.
-----------------------
To Our Readers,
The first half of 2009 has been quite interesting for the “A Letter A Week” project. I started the project in early February as a fun and interesting blog idea. I wanted to write a synopsis of our accomplishments of the first half of 2009.
The very first letter I wrote was a thank you letter to a class I attended as a guest in Cambridge for women from low-income backgrounds who wanted to learn English. After meeting these amazing individuals, I admired their motivation to learn. Just a few weeks ago, I received a response from the Planning Director of the program to let me know that an excerpt of the letter was put in their June 2009 newsletter.
Shortly after, I wrote a letter to the Old Fella Animal Rescue Shelter to thank them for supplying foster care to my dog Jake, who I adopted last July. In response, they used my letter on their website and in their monthly newsletter as well!
As the steroid scandal continues to haunt the baseball world, I wrote a letter to baseball’s commissioner Bud Selig, the head of the MLB Player’s Union Donald Feher and cc’d all of the MLB Teams on my deteriorating affection towards baseball. Though I never heard back from Selig or Fehr, I was surprised to receive responses from two of the teams – the Detroit Tigers and the Boston Red Sox. Though I doubt my opinions will have any actual impact on MLB drug policy, it was a very exciting to receive a letter from an MLB team and it was a very classy thing for them to do.
One of the more fun letters I penned was to the people at Philadelphia Cream Cheese touting their cream cheese as my new favorite food. They were so happy that they sent me 10 coupons for free cream cheese. Boy, am I glad I wrote that letter!
Over the first half of 2009, letters posted on the site raised $451 in donations to charitable causes. Those causes included:
The American Cancer Society
Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue
United Cerebral Palsy
The Warrick Dunn Foundation
Juvenile Diabetes Research
On July 11th, we scheduled a fundraiser for The American Cancer Society. Along with 2 friends (and anyone else who may decide to come along by then), I will be walking 18 laps around the reservoir near my apartment – which is roughly 27 miles. Thus far, we have raised $276 for ACS and we hope to secure more donations by the day of the walk. We had two interesting guest-writers join in the effort. Anthony Marino of the American Cancer Society wrote a letter describing some of the work they are doing to battle cancer. And my mother-in-law Jeri Landron wrote a thank you letter to all those who helped her in her own battle with breast cancer.
In the past few weeks I announced a series of letters being written by Eugene Torri, Jr. Eugene was a high school friend of mine who was paralyzed from the waist down after falling out of a dormitory window back in 1995. What makes Eugene’s story so compelling was that he fell 14 stories… and survived! We are very proud to host Gino’s letters on our site and look forward to his future installments.
Finally, I would like to thank all the people who have joined us on our social network sites. Almost 4,000 people are following us on twitter and our facebook page has grown to 62 followers. I would also like to thank all of the guest writers who lent a hand to the project with their amazing submissions. Thank you for coming along for the ride and we hope the second half of 2009 is as successful as the first half.
Sincerely,
Scott Riecke
