Are you trying to write a letter but having trouble coming up with something to write about? Perhaps this list will help.
THANK YOU LETTER / LETTER OF APPRECIATION
Saying “Thank You” to someone who has earned your thanks is a very polite gesture. Imagine how much more it would mean if this could be conveyed in a meaningful letter that could be kept for years to come. Perhaps there is a friend or family member who has gone out of there way to support you in times of need. Maybe there is a teacher, coach or mentor that has gone the extra mile for you. It might be easy to just go up to them and say “Thanks”, but writing it down could be so much more meaningful and everlasting.
Here is the story of one person who credits writing thank-you notes as "The Secret of My Success".
LETTER OF COMPLAINT / DISCONTENT
Is there something bothering you? Perhaps your landlord hasn’t fixed that leaky pipe. Perhaps you are upset by developments in the news such as politics, environmental issues, religious issues or crime. Maybe you just need to vent to a friend or family member. Writing a letter can be an effective way to communicate your discontentment and perhaps even work towards positive means of change.
FAN LETTER
Do you have a favorite band, athlete or someone else that you might look up to? Sometimes you can get in touch with your icons and idols by sending them a fan letter. Maybe you can’t afford that front row ticket, but sending a fan letter could get you in contact with the people you admire. Responses might be sporadic and if they do come, they might be in generic form letters. But nonetheless, it is always a thrill to receive a response from those we admire.
LETTER OF CONGRATULATIONS
Did someone you know just get engaged, get married or have a baby? Maybe someone got a new job or bought a new house? Was someone you know promoted at work or did they reach some other achievement? All of these things are reason to celebrate success with a Letter of Congratulations. Express your feelings of pride and friendship in writing and your friend is sure to be appreciative.
LETTER OF SYMPATHY / SUPPORT
Sadly, not all letters are upbeat and pleasant. Sometimes you might want to write a letter to someone who has fallen ill or has had a family member pass away. These letters may not always be the most pleasant to write, but sometimes you would like to show someone support and you cannot always be there in person. A letter of sympathy can convey those thoughts and feelings for you.
LETTER TO YOUR CONGRESSMAN/WOMAN
Our political leaders have all been put in place to represent their constituents – the people that live in the district for which they were elected. If there are issues that you feel passionate about, you don’t have to sit there in silence and wait until the next election to have your voice heard. You can write a letter to your Congressional representative. Please see this link to find the Congressional representative that you wish to contact.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Sometimes we read an article in a magazine, newspaper or perhaps an online news service that we have very strong feelings for or against. One of the ways we can express those feelings is by writing a letter to the editor of that publication. A well-written, well thought out letter has the potential to get published – which would certainly be a thrill to any author.
BUSINESS LETTER
There are many reasons you might wish to write a business letter. Perhaps you are applying for a job somewhere. Maybe you had information you wanted to convey to a company on their products – whether you enjoyed them, or perhaps didn’t enjoy them and how they could possibly be improved. Rule #1 is the customer is always right, so the chances of you getting feedback are fairly good.
WRITE A SOLDIER
There are thousands of Americans overseas in harm's way trying to protect our country and our ideals. Even if you have to put aside your politics, take some time to send a thank you letter to one of our soldiers. There are organizations like MySoldier that can help you find a soldier to support. They'd be very glad to hear from you.
CREATIVE LETTER
Can't think of anyone to write? Write yourself! Maybe you have been getting lazy with your homework or not going to the gym as much as you should and you would like to send yourself a note. Perhaps you want to write yourself a note, stow it away for a while and re-read it years later. Maybe you can write a letter two your two-year old baby sister. Clearly she can't read it now, but eight years from now she may find it interesting to hear your thoughts of her when you when you were her age. Be creative with your letters and you'll be surprised how interesting things can happen.
LOVE LETTER
We can’t help you very much with this one. But we didn’t want to leave out the obvious. Perhaps this link could give you some ideas.
